Thanks very much for the help. I think I like the idea of POD because you don't have to spend so much up front to buy all the copies, even if the copies are cheaper per unit. I'm surprised that it costs around £8-£15 per book for POD. Is that for a hardback, because I was thinking more along the lines of paperbacks.

You say it's not worth selling through Amazon or bookshops - is that because the profit you make is too small? I like the idea of selling them locally but figured having them on Amazon etc might be good publicity too.

    Sorry for all the questions!

Hi twins, I've sent you a WWmail.

As for your question: is it right to pay upfront the total amount for illustrations needed for ones story?

    Yes.
And make sure you have the artist's permission to use the artwork not only in the book, but also reproduced on your website (if and when you have one) and in any advertising you may wish to produce to help you sell the book (cards, bookmarks, posters, etc.)

Author House is a 'vanity publisher', offering serivces to those taking the self-publishing route. It is not a traditional publisher. Also it is one of the more expensive self-publishers on the market.
