What does evreyone think of Ann Enright's win? I think it's very encouraging that a tale of alcoholism, madness, sexual abuse, suicide and family relationships has won -it rips open any received fahionable wisdom about what a theme for a 'good' book might be, crosses all the 'too miserable, depressing, and it's only women's' MYTHS out there in Literati land.
As someone who's written a gritty family novel, well, I'm delighted!
And what about catharsis? What about reading something that actually touches one emotionally - isn't that what makes for good writing, anymore? Or is it all just about the pretty words and how they're strung together?
