I need to ask a dumb question about submitting direct to publishers like Snowbooks.
If you are lucky enough to be accepted for publication do they have an editor who helps you polish the MS? I assume it's not like Publish America, a print on demand type thing?
Naomi - if you go to Dee's link at the top, then click on "Snowblog" in the top right corner, you can scroll down to see them.
Gillian - I'm not sure how much Snowbooks help polish the MS, but it's not POD - they are "proper" publishers, and really highly respected, so worth submitting to.
Gillian, at the risk of looking like I've done a site search for entries about Snowbooks (!!), here's what Scott Pack (ex head buyer for Waterstone's says about them):
Another good thing about this is that it gives a chance for unpublished writers to read other unpublished fiction, and hence gain some insight into how publishers decide what they are interested in.
I don't know if Emma is currently posting up everything she receives or just picking the ones she likes - as more entries get sent in, it will no doubt have to be the latter - but the standard seems pretty high. There are quite a few that just Aren't My Sort of Thing, and a couple that I really like even if they have naughty things like adverbs in. That doesn't mean that any are "better" than others, and I guess that's what publishers & agents face every day.
Stating the obvious perhaps, but I find it some consolation.
