Emma, you are so generous and swift with your knowledge of the market. Thank you!

    Buzzard,
Diverse sounds good, as does well-produced. Must take a look. Years ago I subscribed to Glimmer Train and it may have changed a lot but I felt the work was very samey and very diligent-creative-writing-grad-ish. Just not a lot of room for individuality of voice. Maybe it's changed...

Thanks for that, EmmaD. I've heard of neither but will definitely be checking both out.

Just to shout about McSweeneys a little louder, every edition is packaged differently but always really attractively - sometimes paperback, sometimes hard, sometimes boxed, once in the form of somebody's mail! And as for its range, big names such as TC Boyle, Roddy Doyle, Joyce Carol oats, but mostly people you'll never have heard of. And there is no word limit either - sometimes a novella will appear within an edition! - only the promise to consider everything that is submitted.

I ought to get a job marketing the thing! Right, I'm off to check out Glimmer Train.

    Cheers, All
