Thanks guys. I feel a lot calmer after the weekend, and now the work begins! I already have a long list of editorial points to take a look at, (including two glaring plot holes I feel embarrassed to have missed) Once the contract arrives, I'm going to take it to a publishing lawyer. Some of them do specialise in US law,as you can imagine, so I'll take a look at it with them although the 'mock up' I've seen seems pretty simple to understand.

I'm holding off on an agent for now. 2007 is a way away yet, and I have enough spare time to deal with things at the moment. Running the net cafe is really just like having an office where I can write. If it becomes too much, I'll think about it again, but for now, I can't see much reason to enlist one.
