Hey James, I've only just found this thread, so sorry I must be blind. Fantastic news, I'm so thrilled for you. See, what did I say, Karma, where's your ex roomy now hug? Anna's already said it, but I was going to suggest you contact the Writers Guild pronto. Best of luck, triple cheek kisses from me.

Thanks guys. It's a long way off, so I reckon I'll be sticking around here a lot anyway. I can't imagine life without WW!

    Love

Well done mate! Probably suffering from a hangover now Make sure you get a lawyer to go through the contract with a fine toothcomb - you'll probably have to use an American lawyer because solicitors over here won't be able to advise you on US law - although I'm sure that firms over here that specialise in publishing will be able to recommend a reputable outfit in the States - congratulations again!

    Dear James

I echo everyone else's congrats, and Anna's advice about the Writer's Guild - particularly so because this is a US contract, which will have differences from a UK contract.

Ask your publisher any questions honestly, they will expect you to have queries. And let me know if I can be of any use with your questions.

    Best

JB, first of all, fantastic news. You must be feeling exhilerated absolutely. I'm sure in the next few days lots of advice will come your way. There isn't any particular reason why you should need an agent, whose job it is to sell your manuscript to a publisher, if you've already got the publisher.
If you're happy with what you've seen of the publisher, they aren't a POD, you won't have to pay them any money, or do any of the promo work,.. that should be OK.
In your position I'd like to know that the deal they're offering is a 'normal' one.
Get the book Dee mentions to do a bit of research, and there are sites, although, I've never used them so I don't know what they're called, who can give you advice. But I'm sure you'll come across them if you google up. Terry Edge might have something insightful to say. Contact him.
If you need a bit of time to sort things out, tell the publisher you've very interested in their offer, but you're just about to go on holiday for a couple of weeks, or something like that, so you can sort out all you need to. Once again big big congrats.
    Becca.

James, I would still advise you to think about an agent. They have experience in negotiating contracts, book deals, overseas and translation rights, making sure you get all the royalties due to you.

Yes, OK, you have to pay them a percentage, but they don’t make any money until you do. I’d rather pay an agent to do all the dealing while I get on with writing.

Which I should be doing now!

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

    Dee.

James, I've already commented on the wonderful news and I'm really busy at the moment with stuff, so I'm dipping in and out, but I just have to say that every time I see the word 'Huzzah' in this forum (or anywhere else for that matter) it puts a smile on my face. It is exactly the right word for this kind of sensation. I think it should become the WW standard for introducing good news. (Of course, it'll keep my own 'Z' keys as well-plunged as they usually are).
    Huzzah!
