  • How to target the most appropriate agents?
by xxsarahxx at 14:30 on 07 April 2004

I want to target agents who have an interest in exactly the type of novel I'm working on. It's contemporary fiction but very 'young' and modern. I don't just want to write off indiscriminately to any agent interested in contemporary fiction - that's a very broad category and my type of work won't be of interest to all of these agents.

I'm thinking it may be useful to look at authors with similar work who are already published and see who there agents are. How can I find this out? It doesn't seem to to say anywhere in the books themselves.

Any other advice on how to find exactly the right agents to target?

Lots of authors have their own websites with a contact email address. You could try asking them who their agent is. Some will tell you, others won’t. I’m sure none of them would object to you telling them how much you enjoy reading their work.

If I particularly enjoy a book I make a point of emailing the author to let them know. I’ve had some wonderful responses.

    Good luck,

    Dee.
