I've written a novella (40,000 words) which I'm struggling to place with a conventional publisher. I suspect I would be better off taking the e-publishing route.
Can anyone recommend any decent websites? I've seen one - Online Originals - which looks quite good.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm not really familiar with this sort of thing, but I do know that a lot of people speak highly of lulu.com
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Nik.

Do you know why the story is so difficult to place. Do you think it's because it's a novella? Did you go direct to publishers or have you tried agents yet? Have you had any constructive feedback at all? You could always try editorial agencies to get an idea if it is definitely publishable - otherwise your time publishing it online could be time wasted, when it might be better spent editing and getting it as good as it can possibly be, because once it's out there, that's it: your name is stuck to it, and if could be better, you might kick yourself a few years from now.
I got quite interested in Online Originals a few years back, because I was equally frustrated and felt I was banging my head against a wall. After contacting a few authors I decided, in my view, it was a bit of a scam. I don't know what it is now, but back then it cost £25 per submission, and another £25 on each revision. They could keep that up forever! Instead, I spent the money on books to learn how to edit and clean, and I joined this site. Both have been very beneficial.
Lulu.com is all great and cheap, but the main question is this: will your book reach an audience? How many books have you or your friends bought through lulu or online originals?
Hope this helps,
Colin M

You might consider checking out Lightning Source. A major POD provider which also provides ebooks for Amazon.
Check out the blog:
http://www.fonerbooks.com/2005/07/amazon-ebook-sales.html
"Lightning Source has been running free ebook setup promotions for as long as I can remember."
They seem legit, but I've never tried them and this is not a recommendation, so you need to check them out first.

Lightning source are a great option if you want to self publish, because you remain the publisher, so you keep all the rights. They are just a printer that do a little more than the average, but it appears to be a great service. I know a Newcastle publisher that uses them.

Thanks for all your help.
What I'm looking at doing is putting it out on the internet for free, so I think lulu.com could be the best bet (I think I can use their services for free??? They seem to only work off a commission).
I'm probably going to set-up a myspace site with a sample of the book on it, and then provide a link to the whole thing.
well, it worked for Arctic Monkeys.
I've just posted the sample in the Introduce Your Work bit, actually.
