Short stories flummox me. I have no idea how to write them. I started trying them when I first started writing, but all I could come up with were opening paragraphs.
A short story seems harder to me than a novel. It's like a novel in microcosm, with less time for you as a writer to get to know and develop your characters. And it has to be so minutely structured. I don't know whether I'll ever do it. I was going to try my hand at them between Novel 1 and Novel 2, but I have Novelist's Guilt, which means that when I start a short story, I really feel my time would be better spent on the next novel.
There is a certain nack to them, that's for sure, and I only feel lately that I'm closing on it. Most of my 'short' stories have a tendency to spill over into novellas. More than one has become a novel.
