    Yes, use the 97-2003 option for a .doc and ignore the warnings about features not being retained. All the usual features you'd use in a normal document will be absolutely fine.

    In your Word Options under Save you can choose to make 97-2003 your default file format for saving. That's what I do so as to have no problems sharing with any other system.

    and, as far as I can tell, it looks exactly the same as the .docx version

    The two formats are completely different, in terms of how they are saved in the file. A docx file is actually a zip file containing a number of directories and files which conform to a widely-recognised standard, whereas a doc file is a Microsoft proprietary file format.
