fiction doesn't encourage violence any more than video games do

One of the themes I have been exploring in my WIP is the violence inherent in a well ordered and functional society, rather than the mindless thuggery of some of the nastier video games.

It's kinda interesting to realise the implications of what it takes to keep everyone smiling in a certain way and treating each other with the proper respect. There is very little crime on my island and I think the people think they are free.

In many respects they are freer than us, but it does come at quite a cost.

The actual inspiration was "Collapse: the reasons societies choose to fail or survive" by Jared Diamond. But I would say my understanding of the mechanisms was greatly influenced by Golding's Lord of the flies. The difference being, I think the children's society failed (as in actually, not fictionally; it was a brilliant piece of fiction). My one succeeds, but thinking about it, there is quite a grey area as to success criteria.
