Just did a comparative word count in the current draft of my novel (having discarded a 128K pedestrian leviathan some time ago)...
Scenes, snippets and entire chapters that I wrote, but recently cut and that now constitute reference material that I will never ever use: 38000
Actual scenes that I consider publishable and intend to keep: 4000
On the plus side... the 4000 really do say what I want them to say in the way I want them to say it.
