I have just discovered the wonders of internet video as a fantastic research tool! I know, I'm probably the last one to get this, but...
For documentaries, first person accounts, and anything that enables you to get a feel for the nuances of a place, it's hard to beat. Apart from going to the place. Probably both are important.
I'm currently at the research stage of a novel based on the Rwandan genocide (cheery stuff I know, but I am interested in the way in which authors like de Bernieres and playwrights like Brian Friel examine the ways in which small communities are affected by big world events). I have just found a website called www.videosoftheworld.com , which is fantastic, as it gathers videos with a country in mind. I have found masses of information on Rwanda, with loads of pretty difficult to watch stuff, but very useful stuff nonetheless. Having spent a month in Rwanda about a year ago, it certainly made for emotive viewing.
