  • Football Question - 1930s
    by Colin-M at 11:45 on 02 November 2007
Just wondering what kind of football grounds there were in the north of England in the 1920-1930 period. I'm writing a fantasy story set in that time, but need a venue for part of the story. A football ground would be ideal, especially if the had turnstiles and terraces and the whole thing was enclosed - or would it more likely be an open field.

I'm talking about a smallish town, something like Hexham, which would have a team, but not be in the ranks of Man U or Liverpool.

    Any ideas?

Colin, have you thought about contacting the Hexham Courant?

If they don't know the answer they could probably point you towards someone who does.

My mother lives in Hexham, but she's more interested in Formula One than footie!

    Cheers

Thanks Dee. I've managed to side step the issue because I don't want to give the false impression that football is a subject in the story. All I need is a venue.

I know that there were some large grounds back then, and most had terraces, but I wasn't sure if a small mining town would have anything more than an open ground. On my first attempt I compared the ground and team to others, even mentioning that they'd never get to Wembley, then realised I was going down the football route, so I've revised it as this:

I thought again about the people out in the main street, all heading towards the north side of town, to the football ground. But there was no match on today. Even if there was, football wasn’t big in our town, yet the town council had ploughed money into our ground, installing turnstiles and high fencing and steal-mesh barriers between the terraces and the pitch; security being paramount for the other main event we held there: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

(removed the event, as this is a public forum)
