  • Researching Liverpool in the early 60s - was anyone there?
    by writer-ros at 13:53 on 21 August 2007
Hi, I'm writing a novel with at least one chapter set in the early sixties - when the Beatles were playing at the Cavern, and jazz was still on the menu - just. Is there anyone who was there and can remember the atmosphere and day to day life? In particular, if anyone can remember seeing the Beatles at the Cavern, that would be great. I'd just like some details to make it come alive.
    Thanks

Hello, I wasn't alive in the sixties, but I've been to the Beatles museum in Liverpool and they say the walls of the cavern basically were dripping in 'water' from the way people were packed into the room and there's no windows. I've been to the cavern too, it's very small and I'd imagine it would be quite suffocating. I think people fainted on a regular basis when they started getting big and there were safety concerns if I recall to the point I think they were asked not to play there? I can't remember that bit propery thought.

They have a room in the museum where you're surrounded by the screaming of fans that they experienced. It's actually terrifying - it's SO loud.

Maybe it's worth a visit to Liverpool or reading a biog on the Beatles from the library? Might be something on the net too.

    hope this helps a little.

Hi, I was there! I went to see the Beatles at the Cavern, skived off school to do so in fact and have fond and clear memories of the times. If you'd like to PM me, I'd be more than happy to help.

The grandfather of a friend of mine kept the café right next to Lime Street station. John and Paul used to hang around for hours in the caff, waiting for Brian Epstein to come back from London yet again and bring news of whether he'd got them a record deal.
