I was around in 1958 – not quite a teenager, but I might be able to help with some of the detail if you like. For instance, I'm pretty sure rationing ended in 1954 and by 1958 the country was moving beyond post-war austerity – it was in 1957 that Macmillan made his ‘never had it so good’ speech, although probably the majority of the country disagreed with him.
