  • Is 50,000+/- words a novella or a novel?

Just wondered. I mean, when it comes to submitting, how would I classify a story of this length?

Tricky. Mine was called a novel, but wasn't considered 'big' enough to be a first novel. I have seen reviews of two first novels - they were called novels - recently where the books were around the 160pp mark and published by large houses. But Martin Amis' last book - around 190pp - was called by a novella by some reviewers and a novel by others.

Can I call it a short novel? It's difficult isn't it, because most novella definitions I've read state that they are between 20,000 - 35,000 words. Most novel definitions are between 60,000 - 120,000.
