i dont know if i should put in a short prologue in my book. the beginning sort of jumps into the middle of the main adventure without a whole lot of background detail. like: who killed her parents, who the people chasing her are, where she lived ect.

and i dont really know what time era its in. its way before cars and fancy stuff, but not quite midevil. what would you call that? mental block!!!

What I might do, is think about the true starting point of the story. I'm not in favour of 'prologues' as such. You can dodge about in time anyway.

Jumping into the action is a great place to start. You can always slide in the information the reader needs in bits and pieces. The thing to avoid is putting it in all at once in a great chunk, either just after the action - which slows thing right down after such an exciting start - or at the beginning as a prologue, which means the first thing the reader meets is a slab of informaion.

You've got about five hundred years to chose from, so you'll need to do some research and pin it down more closely. Then you can find out the specific details for the period you're setting it in.

Happy birthday, Kaila, and welcome to WW.

Emma is right. You need to decide when and where your story is set, so that you can include authentic details. Google a few history sites, and read lots of historical fiction, to decide which period most appeals to you and suits the broad outline of what you’ve already written.
