I have finally pulled together a draft of the first half of Chapter 1 of my novel (the second half has been floating around the site for a little while). I would really appreciate some feedback on this, whether it's a good opening to a novel etc.

Just to forewarn you: it's quite a long piece. Thanks in advance to anyone who finds the time to take a look.
