  • `Maura`s Arm` about to be amputated
by EmmaD at 15:20 on 30 December 2005
I'm going to take 'Maura's Arm' down in the next few days, as no one's commented for a while. I think I want to put something else in its place and I get confused if I've got more than one thing up at a time. So anyone who wants a look, look now. Apologies if it sounds own-trumpet-blowing to mention (quite casually and in passing, of course) that it's my Bridport story.

And I meant to say, all comments still gratefully received.

I've printed this out before it disappears. I only took a glance thinking historical fiction isn't my thing. Before I knew where I was I'd read the first 1000 words. Don't have time to finish it here but from what I've read so far, I've got to continue. The prose is smooth as silk and faultless. It's so good to be able to turn off the "critical eye".

Is this a past entry to Bridport?

Colin, glad you're enjoying it. Yes, Jim Crace placed it third last year.

Well, it was last years' till today. 2004 is the one I meant, which is rapidly sinking below the horizon!

    Hello Emma,

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading "Maura's Arm" - I didn't comment because it was one of those, "Wow, so that's how it should be done" kind of reading experiences!

    Great story, beautifully written. Congratulations!

BTW - when does your novel come out?

Many thanks, Sarah, it's lovely to know when there's a good reason for a non-comment!. The novels out here in the UK in July (ooh, it's 'this year' now!) and early 2007 in the USA. Still waiting to hear if Headline Review have sold any foreign rights...

Thanks for reading it, JB, and for the comment too, which I've responded to over there.
