Having a lot of fun browsing WW, but confused and not sure where to find the info on how it all works. EG: Is there some etiquette to joining the different groups, or do you just join anything that catches your eye?

Gaius, if you scroll down to the bottom of the page you’ll see a link to a site tour.

As for forums and groups, just dive in. The only restrictions are your own time. If you post some work, it’s best to keep it under 2000 words if you can. The shorter pieces tend to attract more feedback.
