I appreciate the work that goes into comments regardless of who makes them, the fact that we don't pay for 'expert ' response seems to me to be irrelvent as there are many 'qualified ' writers on the site who aren't site experts.

I always try to make constructive comments as and when time permits but working (running writing and other courses plus broadcasting) takes its toll on my time as I am sure commitments do on everyone elses's so I too value my limited time spent on here.

May not one answer be a removed for revision flag so the title stays and perhaps the comments, but the work is removed. Then when re posted the flag is changed and the comments clearly marked as to apply to the pre revised piece.

Or that a piece of work stays for a minimum of 3 months after the last comment with an option saying closed for critique work being removed or revised.

    Hi Terry,

sorry to take so long getting back to you.

Yes, you're right - I do mean full control regarding when I can take a piece down. WW isn't quite the public domain - it's a workshopping website as I see it.

I may be being selfish ( I do agree with you that comments on an individual piece of work can help others) but the main reason I post something on the site is to get feedback that will help me improve the piece and I think it should be down to the poster of the work when (s)he takes it down. Imposing rules and taking away any writer's control over his/her work just seems too much.

The reason WW works so well is because of its relaxed atmosphere and I don't think it would do it any good taking that away.

That said, as I have already stated, I do agree that comments (especially when they're as considered as yours) can be beneficial to others, and with that in mind I think it's a good idea to leave things up - have a look at my profile page - there's loads of my stuff still there, with both positive and negative feedback. I do maintain though, that it should be done vouluntarily.

    Cheers,

    Nik.

I agree with what Nik says. I usually make revisions of my own work after feedback, then repost, but I don't remove the posting in the interim. I always try to comment on other people's work that I am alerted to, but I think my comments are for members to respond to as they see fit. I don't reread my comments, so I wouldn't even be aware if they were removed.I agree that reading and making critiques of other people's work is as beneficial to the critic as to the original poster

Quite often another member will point out some error one has missed or highlight a virtue of the writing one has overlooked. This is why it is quite useful to see feedback.

I've just had cause to use the "Delete" option to remove some of my work (all pieces which had not received any comments). I therefore now know the answer to one of the questions I posed: the system does not warn that all comments will be lost (it just asked me if I was sure I wanted to delete the pieces completely).

I've just posted in 'Introduce your work' that I'm about to take a story down, so I'll be interested to see from the hits whether that's something that people want to know about.
