  • How about a clean out?

We often have a problem with groups being full. While inactive members are removed after 3 months, nothing seems to be done about non members i.e. people who joined for a month or a year, and then didn't continue. I don't understand why these people still appear on the site. Surely it would be possible to send them an email after, let's say two months, explaining that they (and their work) will be removed from the site if they don't join or renew.

I have a friend who joined for a month about two years ago. She posted a poem. She never became a full member, yet her poem regularly comes round on the random read. What is the point?

    Hi Elspeth,

I started a thread 'time for a spring clean' about six months ago. DB did respond to this, but I think if someone has posted a comment on a group forum it counts towards their activity. There are a lot of groups where members haven't uploaded any work for much longer than 3 months. I think if they are commenting on other group work fine, but if they are not doing this they should be removed. I've given up my place in groups before to let others in.

Yes, Shay, I agree with you about that point - there are TWO other threads on the site at the moment which are saying the same thing - once again and it's a subject that comes around quite regularly so something in the 'system' isn't working there.

What i meant was members who are no longer members - free trials who didn't join or members who didn't renew. It seems that if they left any work up, they are not removed from the site and e.g. their stuff comes round regularly in the random read. Plus, of course, they clog up group spaces and make group dynamics sluggish.

Better to have half empty but active groups than full dead uns!

Indeed, the comedy/humour group has a host whose last activity was Dec 04. Maybe Georgette isn't even a member anymore?

People still appear as full members even after their membership has expired.

Insane Bartender decided not to renew his membership - he wrote a forum post to say goodbye, so we know this to be fact, but if you were to look in his profile it still appears as if he's a current member:

    http://www.writewords.org.uk/members/show_profile.asp?member_id=374

status full member, since April 2003 - should it be ex-member, or the profile and work deleted from the system after x months of non membership?

I wonder if the freebie members are left on to alert DB if they try to repeat their free month? Perhaps there could be some other way to flag them up, or maybe they could stay on the records but their work deleted and group membership cancelled.

As for paid-up members who are inactive: they shouldn’t be threatened with extermination if they’ve paid for a year, until their time is up. Then, if they don’t renew, they should be wiped of the face of the planet… sorry… got a bit carried away there!
