  • any other beginners in this group?
by kat at 12:52 on 03 June 2005
Looking at some of the profiles and reading peoples work I think I am out of my depth in this group. It makes it difficult to put my work up for everyone to see. I did not intend to open another topic as I am not a full member but as the beginners group is closed I wonder if there are other new members who feel the same?

    Hi Kat,

I am a beginner too. Hopefully you can join the beginner's group, and put up some work. It does take some courage to start with, but it has been a valuable experience for me.

I am planning to comment on other's work more - but that takes a little intrepidity too!

I meant to ask a little about your background - as your profile does not say a great deal?

Or am I being too nosy?

Don't be put off by members' profiles - in any of the groups. I'm sure many profiles are like CVs - designed to show us in their best light. I could call myself published, but I don't find the vanity kind much to shout about. I have also grown older, so fame and fortune are lagging behind health and mobility in my priorities.
We are all scribbling away whilst doing other things, and have joined this site to gain feedback from our peers so we can improve our skills. Folk are here to help, not pour scorn.

    Kat,
I've read your work and I certainly don't think you are out of your depth. Far from it. I wish you'd put up some more chapters. Has something in particular made you feel disheartened? I'm in the first quarter of my first novel - you've finished yours! Be brave, post more. You're doing great.

I did upload a piece of my work and every reply was constructive, helpful and very kind. Well worth the terror it induced. As for a profile I have written nothing since the first year at school and that was a very, very long time ago. I tried several short stories but felt trapped by the length restrictions. I finished a novel 2 years ago and have sat on it ever since.Thats about it.

If you see my reply to Nikki you will see you vanity publishing is nothing to apologise for you made a decision to do something with your work. I am determined to pummel this book into shape and try my luck, with a little help, of course.

Always generous. I'll try and answer. My passions became a bit of a family joke I try things out but soon drop them. Writing was another experiment, to see if I could do it. My first attempt came in at only 40,000 words, far too short due to lack of planning. This novel is the only thing I have managed to complete.Once I finished it I seemed to freeze and apart from outlines I have not written anything for a while. I am bogged down in the editing and may never scramble out.If I can rustle up the required fee you may see more of it.
