This hasn’t happened to me for a while but, once again, I’ve carefully read a piece of work, making notes as I went, only to find a message at the end of it to say that it could only be commented on by group members.
This particular piece was written by a new member, I enjoyed reading it very much, and I wanted to say so.
How does this happen? If it’s visible for me to read, why can I not comment on it?

How frustrating. I choose to only make my writing visible to group members, because just at the moment I prefer the idea of working within a group in that way. But, like you, I assumed that this meant the work was only visible to those in the group as well as only 'available for comment' to them.
I suppose if you have some comments to pass on to an individual you could still WWMail them and say that you're not sure how you came to see their work but you're sending your comments in case they're of interest.

Thanks Mazzy, I’ve already told her on another thread that I enjoyed her writing. She is just as puzzled as me because she set it to be visible to all WW members, and there’s no option to restrict who can comment on any uploaded work, whoever it’s visible to.
I think it’s a glitch in the system so I've WWmailed DB to see what he thinks.

Hi Dee
I looked into this and the work in question was indeed set to be visible by all members, but was uploaded in the beginners group. Part of the idea behind the beginners group is that it's a safe place for new writers to try things out, so we made it not open to comment by people outside the group.
I do see that this has not been explained clearly enough and will have a look at ways of making it more logical!
Thanks

Thanks David, that sounds reasonable so long as the group members are aware of it. Could you think about putting the message about commenting at the head of the piece of work, then the rest of us would be alerted to the fact that we can’t comment.
