has anyone tried this Derek. can we save it to that page? I have an excellent photo that I'm scanning tomorrow and I will try and save it at the link you put up, tomorrow. You're gonna love this pic. It's hysterical and I don't think it would break any copyright laws.

Thanks Derek, this seems to work pretty well.
I can't start layout until we fix on a publisher (so I can get cover specs). Have we decided on this anyone?

    Best

OK the photosite I found to be best (the one that Sion has tried)... http://www.photosite.com/~site/pslo/photo_website.ffhtml

It's free but you need to sign up and download a little programme that organises and uploads the piccys for you. This particluar one seems to be the best choice because there's no limit on individual photo sizes (only on the total amount of space).

As Sion said, we need the publisher sorted so that we have sizes/layout specs etc. I have looked but so far only got info from one printer/publisher. Details -

I'm afraid I'm not able to put as much effort into hunting for publishers as I'd like... Work is getting a bit too busy. Perhaps we could all go on the hunt and then compare notes here??

We’re probably all in the same boat, Derek. I’m in a panic about finishing TWH.

I believe Shay did some research on publishers right at the start and suggested PABD.

    Yeah, it's time consuming...

Well the prices vary, and we could simply go with the cheapest of the few we have so far. Quality of product and service is the thing that concerns me though, and I wonder if we should go with the one that Richard Brown suggested. We have his recommendation, he's used them personally, and even if we find one that looks like a better deal... you never know which are sharks until you've tried them...

    Here's his article -

I've got Nell's book The Golden Web in front of me - printed by Antony Rowe - and it looks very good.

The quote looks good to me. I'm afraid I don't know enough about the printing process or the materials, to know if this quote is right for us, or if it covers all the services we need. If anyone else understands better then please say...

The price seems fine to me.

It appears more economical than PABD.....

I was delighted with Antony Rowe in every respect. A matt-laminated cover is worth thinking about - it costs an extra £32 if I remember correctly, and makes the book look more expensive. Don't forget that it'll be an extra £35 for the barcode to be put on the back cover if you'd like them to do that rather than have the cover designer do it. You'll need to supply them with the ISBN of course, which you'll already have registered with the agency when you sent them the title and the title verso pages. Amazon can take ages to get the info on site, so it's worth doing that asap, because your book won't appear until you've registerd the ISBN. If you already know all the above just ignore me!

Thanks for the advice, Nell. I vote we go with this one. What say everyone else? There are 13? 14? of us in this project but not much noise out there...

I'm happy to use Antony Rowe. This price is better than PABD and we have testimonials from Nell and Richard.

Nell, please feel free to dish out as much advice as you can (I can't speak for the others, but I need as much help as I can get with this What's the difference between matt laminated and gloss laminated? I would have thought that being laminated made the cover glossy anyway (sorry if I'm being dumb). And what is stitched, and unstitched? Also, is the paper type quoted a good quality one?

    Sorry for all the questions...

Elspeth is right, let's get the for & against count for Antony Rowe. Unless anyone has found another printer, I don't see the point in dragging this out.

    I'm for Antony Rowe, too.

I also wondered about the stitched vs unstitched. I have just recently learned about the laminated covers - though. Aesthetica magazine has a nice card cover, but it is not laminated. If you have a copy, I think you'll be able to see what it means.

By the way, I think I would like to replace two of my weaker pieces with "Like Pulling Teeth" and "Sandra Spacebabe" now that those two will have been published.... If I do, what should I pull out? Queuing? Sprinkling of Sugar? Harvey & Hermione?
  • Re: Flash Fiction collection - new thread

Derek, most paperbacks are what is called 'perfect bound' ie - glued rather than stitched. Stitching is obviously stronger, and mostly used for hardcover copies. The pages are collected in folded (rather than cut) bundles then stitched together before being glued. More expensive, but longer lasting. Re. the matt vs gloss cover, it just depends on which laminate is used. Matt gives a soft satiny finish rather than a super-shiny one. Re. the paper - bookwove is lovely, soft and bulkier than the smooth paper often used for POD. Antony Rowe do a cream one too. Don't forget to find out how wide the spine will be and to allow 3mm bleed on all four edges of the cover. Is it to be a paperback edition?
