  • What has Writewords done for you?
by joanie at 23:18 on 26 November 2004
I can't even remember how I came across WW - searching on the internet, probably - but I can't believe how in such a relatively short space of time my writing has improved and how much I have learned.

The worrying thing is that it's a bit like a drug - I really suffer if I can't get my daily fix of WW. I'm even booking my holiday depending on whether there is internet access in the hotel!

So what has WW done/is WW doing for you?

I think Writewords is the best writing site on the web - it's given me some excellent tips for my writing via the online groups, and also some much-needed encouragement. Without it, I never would have found the wonderful Nell, who was kind enough to look at my second novel and give much needed advice (and 2 verbatim sentences!!) for the art sections in it. Thanks again, Nell!! It's also a superb source of competition and jobs news - and has given me the sense of a wider playing field for the writing I do.

It's also huge fun!! I couldn't be without it. So, thank you, all.

    LoL

Anne, I'm touched (in many ways!).

WriteWords has given me enough confidence and faith in my writing to take the plunge and publish The Golden Web - (as Dee says, shameless plug number xxii). I'd never have had the nerve before I found you all, so thanks WW and everyone. I remember when I joined seeing my name and little white cowbell appear on the sidebar and visiting it from time to time until it disappeared! When my yearly membership was up I was accidentally excluded from the site for two or three days until David sorted things out. WriteWords limbo was not a nice place to be - it was so good to be back.

"little white cowbell" ??? er, isn't it supposed to be a person?

as to WW: great fun, great, great feedback, confidence, information, silliness, technique, making friends (and the occassional enemy!), my spade, Patrick, the RLG, The Quest, The Brit (tho sadly not visited for many a day now) competition news, encouragement that led to publication...the bravery to begin attempting The Novel
    shall I go on?

Hey Nell! I thought they were cowbells too until someone put me right… LOL.

What has WW done for me? Given me confidence, rapid feedback, honest critique, lots of highs and a few lows. I’ve made friends I value highly. And, sadly, lost a few. Whatever happened to Richard West, Nahed and Ralph??? I miss them…

I’ve seen the birth of some first-rate work – Terrestrial, Exit 21, Somnambulant, The Suitcase, Rio (you still there, Dawn?) and many, many more. And I feel honoured to have had a small part in their shaping.

Paying For The Gallery and The Winter House (SP # 1059) are immeasurably better now than they would have been without the help I’ve had from other members.

Writing is indeed a solitary occupation – which is one of its attractions for me – but, when I feel the need for contact with fellow-addicts, WW is the only place to go.

Tc, I knew they were little people really, but they do look like cowbells! Speaking of missing persons, Ralph was moving last time I heard from her, perhaps she'll return when she's settled. Richard and Nahed have left a huge gap, as have Andrew (bluesky3D), Ellie (Ellenna), JohnK, Matheson and others too. Come back you guys!

Perhaps we should WWmail them? Or email? I had Nahed's email address but she's changed her server since she moved so I don't think it works now. I’ll give it a go…

I’d love to see Andrew back. I was really enjoying The Icera Stone. Anyone know how he’s going with it?

Yes, I agree. I didn't know the others, but Nahed and Ralph are fantastic writers and were amongst my favourite people on the site. Very sad that they've gone.

On the subject of WW, the support, encouragment and many helpful comments I've received here has given me the confidence to send out my shorts - which in turn, has given me the confidence to do the same with TTW. So, many thanks to everyone.

Dee, thank you for that kind mention of Somnambulant, I am very flattered.

    Best

Dee, The Icera Stone was finished, but Andrew also made a big move, so perhaps he'll return in the fullness of time. (Sorry about the cliché, but I do like that image of time blossoming or inflating gently like a large balloon.)

Writewords gave me, personally, the confidence to write some poems and pick up some wonderful writing tips too AND meet some very lovely people. (remember Brighton?)

I've learned an incredible amount about writing since joining this site. After Xmas I will be re-writing my novel for the 3rd and hopefully last time. I was a bit unhappy at one time about feedback issues but have got over this. It's a great site and I want to come back to the warm bosom of understanding that is Writewords.
