odd quirks of the forum  vonsudenfed at 11:00 on 11 September 2008

I'd better warn you in advance that I'm a Mac user, which may have some bearing on this, but anyway.

The forum has a couple of odd quirks for me. One is that when I refresh the page of a group I belong to (i.e. Novel Writers 1), it remembers I am logged in at the top right corner, but doesn't remember this across the rest of the page - so most of the comments are labelled Group Members Only. The only way I can refresh these pages is to go back to My Writewords, and then to the group that way. Which is a little tedious as I tend to leave the pages open for days at a time...

The other one is less serious, but I use tabbed browsing in Safari, for example to look at more than one piece of work from my group without going back and forth to the home page. But I can't do that with the forums. It's OK when I am in a forum, I can open the conversations as separate tabs. But when I go to the Forum Main page, I can't open any of the forums down the RHS as tabs. Irritating, but possibly fixable?

Is this because I am a Mac user, or is everyone's computer doing this too?

Yes, that happens to me too, and I'm a PC user, so it can't just be macs - although I only get it occassionally, so it might be a glitch that is more prevalent with mac systems - maybe it's a cookie thing, and your mac is regularly culling it's cookies so the site forgets you're there (or vice versa) are until you remind it by going back in.

Not sure about the other thing - I use tabs, so I'll go try it.

But it's still telling me that I'm logged in on the top right. Perhaps it's eating half the cookie...

Not that it's that important in the greater scheme of things...

You haven't logged out so the site knows you're there, even if you turn off your computer. However, if your mac is not saving any navigation cookies, it won't know you're actually on the site until you tell it you are by refreshing. Often there is a 'time out' so if you haven't posted something, or gone to another thread - maybe you are reading an upload - it'll forget you're there.

Just checked my tabs and they seem to be working ok, so I suspect it's a fault in Safari.

Worth WWmailing David Bruce for advice - eg, to check it's not a glitch on your user settings.
