Good work, Sion!
I prefer the one on the right. My only concern would be if we used Ephemera as a title. Is their a mag called that? Is it too obscure for the masses?
Fantastic covers though. So vibrant.

S'lookin' good. Thanks Sion. I've got some pretty bad pictures of myself in school/church plays if you're interested... or even some lovely b&w baby ones (yes, I'm that old).

How do we stand with some of the old brand names, such as Pears. Can we just use them?

Sion,
I'm happy to send a few photos across to you. If we all send a handful of photos, we might just have enough to put it together, or at least a start... But that's obviously up to you, so I won't send any yet.
I really love the idea, it's definitely the best way to capture the diversity...and the flash stories are like snapshots themselves.
It makes the book look very intriguing, I hope the photo's we source will keep that feeling. Let's get the pictures sourced! I'm dying to do a website for the book... If we need any photo editing done, to change colours, composite images, age or enhance photo's etc, then I will happily do some photoshop work to help if you need me.
Derek.

Sorry, I didn't fully read Sion's earlier post about the images. The idea get's better. I'd love to include my grandparent's wedding picture if possible.

uh-oh... I'll have to buy a new scanner... any excuse!

Just a little thing - the "fifteen talented authors" - I'd prefer we take out the "talented" (I know we're all supposed to blow our own trumpets, but this is Britain and I don't know that kind of thing works for you here - just raises the question "who says so?") and substitute "new".
But still think the cover is absolutely fantastic (indeed, improves with viewings).
Re "Ephemera" I like it, I like the word, it's connotations - although maybe it moves our target audience towards the literary, and in doing so perhaps leaves behind a more general audience. So I like the word, but like the idea too of a more general market, so what I'm saying is I'm neutral. Which may not be helpful (but you brought it up Shay, so don't blame me!)

My 10p on the title...
I think it's fine, but I would make the "a collection of flash fiction" much more prominent and possibly even make it part of the title. Plus put some mention of short stories on there for those who don't know what flash is.
Purely because this will make the book easier to find, or more likely to be found, by anyone searching the web, or searching an online book store, or scanning the shelves of a bookshop. The cover will grab anyone who wasn't specifically looking for flash, the title needs to get a direct hit... I own one collection of Flash Fiction, and I found it by typing "flash fiction" into the search on Amazon...it was the only book found, not surprising as it's called "Flash Fiction - 72 short stories"...Dull, but it gets the book found.

Hi, all.
This sounds pretty positive.
As far as images go, I think electronic files (jpegs preferably) would be preferred (don't want to mislay the only exsisting photo of great aunt Doris snogging Prince Albert). We'd have to set a minimum resolution for the quality of the files, but scanning should do the trick.
As for trademark items, 'Pears' still exist so we'd have problems with that but there are plenty of similar items we could use old packaging (defunct companies), old cigarette cards etc.
Like the contents, the cover should be a collaborative effort from the authors and can contain images that you love/have a connection with or just something that catches your eye - some antique, some modern etc. The more eclectic, the better.
As for the title, it can be something as simple as: The Collection, or Collector's items etc.
But I like Ephemera because of its additional association with brevity.
I don't have any issues with removing the word 'talented' or even 'new' for that matter, and just referring to '15 authors'.
I didn't put flash into the main heading because I read in one of the posts that it wasn't so well understood as a description??
Derek, I can get a bit of photoshop work done but anything you can do at your end would be much appreciated. I'll drop you an e mail later about logistics later today.
Best

Hey, how'd you know about my great aunt Doris?
I can go with the title. It is a cool word. As for new / talented. We ARE talented! There I've said it. Anyone who's looked up the members success page recently will see that. How about '15 Hot New Writers' ? I can sense Anj and Elspeth cringing!

Let's not be shrinking violets.
How about fifteen talented new writers?

What about calling ourselves a group name? I think it would work really well, and adds another dimension to interest buyers and reviewers... So it's not just a bunch of unrelated new authors, it's a group who work together, and release further books together...a group that other new writers will want to get in!
Think of the book like an album by a band who's members all take turns to sing, rather than a 'now that's what I call writing' collection by various artists
Waddaya think?
(But if we do it, then the name will have to be our own, rather than a reference to WW)
Derek.
-
What, you mean a sort of WW Club 15?
Andrea
-
Yeah but without the WW (coz we don't want any issues using the name...).
Sounds a bit comical, but with a less humorous title I think it'd work.
-
Derek, pssst, I was joking
