Karim - sorry but what a load of tosh. If the guy wants criticism, what's the point of just being nice about it? That's what critics do, otherwise you're just being supportive, and offering no help other than to massage ego.
I mean, get a grip. Terry's explained his actions, and thanks to spurious accusations about damaging the poor writer's fragile artistic soul like yours, he'll never be able to give full, professional standard criticism in fear of sensitive writer overload.
What is the point of this site, if not to become better writers? If your artistic soul is what your bothered about, it's a bit self-indulgent to push it on everyone expecting them to understand, don't you think?

I have to agree with Karim that I felt that particular comment to be overly harsh, especially to a new member, but I notice Terry's comments are usually more encouraging.

Ahhhh! Forgot to say congratulations, Terry!
Congratulations, Terry.

one is minded to ask why somebody , who has only recently joined and is presumably not the writer of the piece, goes back to a critque which Terry made on 3rd June 2004 to make a point.
Having read Terry's comments you are probably going to get harsher than that, assuming you get past the agent's publisher's front desk form your agent, publisher sometime in your life.
but still return to my first point odd that

I have been reading your site for several months. I am researching a book on xenophobia and racial intolerance with particular reference to the treatment of Muslims. I did not join the site earlier since I was not, and still am not, convinced that it is in general a welcoming place for foreigners. However, I thank Mr or Ms Eyeball for the thoughts above.
When I saw Mr Edge's piece in June, I saved it as an example of the reception that foreigners of any kind sometimes receive in Britain. Now I see that Mr Edge is considered as an expert in literature, I am more intrigued than ever to know why an educated man should treat a fellow writer, albeit from another country, with such hostility. I ask why. I still do not understand.
Wassalamu Alaikum,
Karim.

Karim,
I am afraid that you will have some difficulty remaining impartial in your research now that you have become involved, and I hope that you are not operating from a biased starting point: guilt until proven otherwise. After all, you can find bias anywhere.
However, that is now what this thread is about. Perhaps you would like to begin another one, now that you have stepped into the open.

Typos should read: 'guilty' (not 'guilt') and 'not' (not 'now')

Hi Terry
Well done - like many others I thought that you were a site expert already!!! Anyhow your advice has been encouraging, invaluable and very patient as far as I'm concerned.
By the way - my ten year old is having trouble finding enough football based stories to read - so tell that to your agent!
best wishes

Tell me, how do you define the term ‘foreigner’? This piece you highlight was, apparently written by someone called Ian Smith living in the south east of England… not exactly the image brought to mind by the term ‘foreigner’… so what point are you trying to make?
We have members from several ethnic backgrounds and we have members who live in other countries. They are all treated with the same respect as anyone else and we expect the same participation from them as any other member.
You know what I think? I think you are using this site for your own agenda and I am offended that you should use this particular thread to promote your racist comments.

Terry,
I’m in your corner, and congratulations. (please go back to being a tough critic – at least with my stuff
)

Although I had reservations about that particular comment, I wouldn't want you to think I had any about your promotion to expert. I know your knowledge and capacity for analysis will continue to be a valuable addition to the site.

Dee,
Very well put. I share your sentiments 100%.

Thanks, Ani.

Karim, are you related to Ian Smith in any way? If not your interest in this particular comment seems odd to say the least. Personally I always think that posting published work is a fait accompli - what possible benefit can any comments have to the author? WW is a support site for writers to help them improve their work so that it stands the best possible chance of publication, if that has already happened then the goal has been achieved and any time spent reading and commenting would be more useful elsewhere. As for discrimination against foreigners, Dee has wisely pointed out how unjust that accusation is. If you have a hidden agenda why not just reveal yourself?
Nell.

Karim - dunno about welcoming foreigners here, but the odd nutter does get berated.
I can assure you, Terry's comments are not just aimed at Muslims, though Ian Smith doesn't strike me as the name you'd pick as a convert.
If I were you, I'd take a step back and a deep breath, before you explode in self-righteousness.

Okay, one last word on this subject- WriteWords treats all its members with respect and equality and expects those members to do the same to each other. We do not tolerate rascism, homophobia or any other example of intolerance- and if anybody feels they have seen an example of this, please email us at the site direct, don't make spurios allegations in an unrelated thread. The comments Terry made on the work mentioned have no element of rascism, and we are puzzled by this allegation. So- let's get this thread back to what it should be; welcome Terry, in your new guise!- and long may you continue to critique people's work with vigour and passion. There. That's it.
