  • Membership fees for younger members and students
by olebut at 18:30 on 13 August 2004
I wonder what others of you think but one of my tasks (as part of my job and as a personal mission ) is to encourage younger people to write creatively and keep writing, for after all they are the writers of tomorrow and it will be the they who take up the cudgels when I and many more of us are dead and gone.

Thus and partly as a result of a converstaion with some young writers I wondered if the £35.00 membership on here is rather out of their reach.

Yes I know the argument about high disposable income but the type of person who writes is not probbaly in that bracket and 16 year olds and students have little money especially students, so I am suggesting that perhaps the site mangers consider a sensibel reduction for younger members and students.

Yes I know it could be open to misuse but then equaly so can the 16 + rule

no doubt those who agree with me will say so and those who don't will equally voice their view

over to you guys and gals

There was a young lad on here about a month ago; he wrote a short play (I think he was eleven). It was quite refreshing to see someone with that naive enthusiasm that I remember having at that age. I'm not knocking this or being condescending, I genuinely thought it was good to see, and it brought back a few memories, so I support the idea, in theory, but I can see it might be hard to prove age.

On the other hand, paying a membership fee makes you take this site seriously.

While I like the idea in principle, I’m not so sure I’m in favour of it in practice. I tend to think of WW as an adult site and I think I would feel restricted in what I say in the threads or in the writing I upload if I thought children might read it.

I don’t write for children and I wouldn’t want to feel I should be censoring my work. I know there’s nothing to prevent children joining now if they want to but reducing the fee would increase the numbers who stay on to become full members.

How about a linked site for them which current WW members could access. I would imagine a writing site designed to attract young writers will also be very useful for adults who write children’s fiction.

Dee I odn't think I was usggesting lowering the age limit just being alittle more sympathetic to the younger element 16 + and students.

I think the idea of a a writing site for children is a great one and should be progressed forthwith.
