  • How about a sci-fi group?
by Account Closed at 23:44 on 25 May 2004
God, I feel so sad even mentioning this. But there's some sci-fi writing that is pretty cool. How about a sci-fi group being created?

Any takers, nightmare makers, sci-fi breakers?

Wouldn't this come under the all-encompassing umbrella of fantasy? The two are inseperable/interchangeable anyway.

I write sci-fi stuff, so I'd definately join. I was quite surprised there wasn't one already.

Hi Milou, what sci-fi authors do you admire?

I like Philip K. Dick, Harry Harrison, Richard Matheson Isaac Asimov, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and George Orwell's 1984.

    Hi Steve
Sounds good to me. I was surprised that there wasn't a group. I call my novel sci-fi because it's future set, but I don't really know if it is.

    Do you like Gibson?

    Hi Sharon,

I like the idea of sci-fi that is "loose", like it's just abound from the realms of possibility. Not a case of science-fiction, but science-fact.
Set close to our own time. Love that kind of stuff, like cyberpunk, and neo-noir is very cool.

Is you novel on WW? I'll have a read if it is.

I'm reading Mona Lisa Overdrive by William Gibson at the moment. I've not read any of his other stuff yet. It's blowing my mind each time I read it lol I want to read some Harlan Ellison, read a cool interview with him and he sounds tough-as-nails and cool as ice. I missed Ray Bradbury off my fav. sci-fi authors! *I'l never get into heaven now* Some of the sci-fi Anime films are wicked. Has anyone seen Ghost In The Machine, the Anime that The Matrix ripped off?

So what do you like most about sci-fi, Sharon?

    Hi Steve
I like the Neuromancer set, which includes Mona Lisa Overdrive, but my favourites of his are the next set: Virtual Light, Idoru and All Tomorrows Parties. They seem much better structured and the characterisation is better. I used to read loads of sci-fi, and my novels always seem to go in that direction; it's not a conscious decision, but for someone who writes it, I don't know enough about it, or read enough of it. My last big read was Ilium by Dan Simmons.

My novel is called Terrestrial and the first three chunks are up. If you want to have a look, I'd be glad of any feedback as I'm a bit confused about it at the moment. I'm thinking of doing residential course in the summer in the hope of getting some clarity.

Do you have any sci-fi up?
    Sharon

What do I like most about sci-fi? I think it has taken the place that myth held for earlier cultures. It goes to the same psychological places and allows us to think beyond the boundaries of realism. In that, I think it's more important than people give it credit for.

    Hi Sharon,

Terrestrial is a great name for a novel. It Invokes many possibilities of what the story is about. I'll have a read and give you some feedback. A residential course, what's one of them, is it for research of your novel or something?

I've not got any sci-fi up yet, but I have started on a sci-fi novel called Tomorrow Ever After. Will upload the first chapter in a couple of weeks.

In sci-fi I like the idea of how mankind is going to survive. The world's a mess as it is now, and with the overkill of technology, a few decades down the line seem like a frightening thought. That's the kind of sci-fi I like, future-noir.

Good idea Steve. I was going to say that I don't write sci-i, then remembered that the novel I'm 20,000 words into is pure sci-fi. I guess it's a genre that just creeps into your writing, so I'll not say that now (okay, guess who's well into the red wine).

I might not join the sci-fi group, but I'll definitely be reading the posts and joining in - just like the horror group. I don't write horror, so I didn't want to take up a place, but it's turning out to be one of the livelier groups.

I think I'm with you on my taste though. I like sci-fact. The idea of taking a simple idea and projecting it into the future. I can't really get into learning a shed load of alien names and politics. I haven't read a huge amount of sci-fi, but I did love The Fountains of Paradise and Rendesvous With Rama by Arthur C Clarke. I love Asimov's short stories but I also like some border line stuff. Stephen Fry's Making History for example.

Okay - pop quiz. Who coined the term Scientifiction to describe their writing?

Join it Colin - if it's created. You're 20,000 words into a sci-fi novel, you can get some wicked feedback.

Know what you mean about alien names and the fancy fictional fantasy stuff like The Planet Zuhrain 71B, it's hard to get excited about a planet called that.

I'm looking forward to reading and watchin' I, Robot. There's a hollywood film coming out in summer with Will Smith. Looks okay, and a little bit different.

Pop quiz, lol, always makes me think of Dennis Hoppers maniacal pop quiz rant in Speed
Hugo Gernsback was the man! He came up with it in 1924 when he published an early sci-fi mag that didn't do very well. Two years later, without telling a soul, he surprised the world by publishing a radical "Scientifiction" mag called Amazing Stories. It's still going strong today isn't it?

Do you think in the future, they'll invent Red Tabs? Little tablets that have a few glasses of wine in them? lol That would be a wicked invention. And Vod Tabs, I'd buy a few of them.

There's a bloke on our estate already selling em. Or something similar. Nice bloke, must be doing okay, he wears lots of gold and drives a BMW with blacked out windows. I'm not sure it's an image thing though - more to hide the fact he's got ginger hair and acne, and isn't really old enough to drive a car.

    jeeezus I'm pissed.
