  • Question for David…
by Dee at 14:06 on 06 March 2004
Or someone else might be able to enlighten me.

I’ve just had some feedback from Wordy (thank you) on Paying For The Gallery (shameless plug number 97) and went straight in to make the amendment she suggested.

I suddenly wondered… what if someone was reading it at the time? Would it go off their screen? Would it stay the same until I re-submitted it? Or would the words change before their very eyes?

    It’s no big deal… I’m just curious.

    Dee.

    Hi Dee,

No, it would not disappear from others' screens - your work is held on a database, and in effect anyone looking at it is sent a copy of whatever is in there since you last hit your "submit" button. It's like opening the BBC news website - it will remain unchanged forever unless you hit the 'refresh' button to download the latest version.

Hope that helps (without being too patronising)

    Hi Dee.

When you click on a link your PC sends a request for the web page specified in the link. The server in WW towers responds to this by replying with all the required bits and bobs that will enable your PC to display the web page. Once your PC has all this information the transaction is over. The web page that you see on your PC exists on your PC only. If a change is made in the meantime then this will not effect the page on your computer. To see any changes the user would have to send another request, ie refresh their page.

Hope that helps. I am such a geek!

As an example of this, Nigel’s post was made while I was tapping out my response, and I was completely unaware that he had posted a good answer already.
