  • is there an argument for a write words chat room?
by olebut at 17:37 on 01 March 2004
I have thought for some time that many of the comments made on work and in the forums are more appropriate for a chat room style conversation and it occured to me that with the recent changes to the archive page, perhaps there is an argument to ask the site owners to establish one, possibly based on the genres.

Thus we have a poetry chat room a fiction chat room etc.

or could the write words lounge be changed into a chat room?

the messaging ( look to make sure I haven't typed massaging) facility is very useful but is a bit laborious.( massaging would also be a welcome addition sat over a hot keyboard for hours on end totally addicted to write words.

I accept the technicalities of providing a chat room may make it impossible but I think that it could reduce the number of posts and be a very sociable addition.

no doubt you will post your views.

    take care

    Hi David

I too think a chatroom would be great. I did mention it before in one of my posts, together with the hit counter on uploaded pieces but I sometimes feel as if I'm talking to myself. In fact, it is often the case whoopsie...excuse the smiley or the winky.

    Massages would be great too!

I think there's something very odd going on today on this site. My post shows up here on the main forum but it doesn't show up in the WriteWords Lounge Forum..it says 0 replies.

    hmmm....

I suspect that when the Brucemeister altered things a few things went awry as they sometimes do with 'puters

I must admit I am not keen on the counter idea unless it only registered the once when somebody clicked on to your work. Equally though I often read stuff and dont leave a comment because I either have nothing to say or what I would say has already been said. So I guess a sort of hits counter would at least indicate that more than the 3 people who have left comments have read the work.

I do have to admit that I have posted poems which I think are great, the few who read them also seem to like them but you perhaps only get 3 or 4 comments which is a bit disapointing for what may be weeks of work, cant think how the novelists and script writers feel in a similar position.

as for talking to yourself one benefit is you always getthe answer you want.

Hi Olebut, been away from writewords for a few days but looking at some of the comments and forum threads today.. I am not sure a chat room would be a very peaceful idea!

Are we talking like an IRC server runing an applet in the forum or something?

    Hi,

Can anyone explain - in very simple English - what a chat room is and how it works? I envisage typing something out that appears on one's screen and also on a 'central screen' viewed by other member at the same time. What if five people are typing at once?

If you answer this one IB, please remember that I am NOT an I.T. person!

    Thanks,

    Len
