I'm thrilled to bits to have been commissioned by Hodder/John Murray to write Get Started in Writing Historical Fiction, for the very well-known and long-established Teach Yourself imprint. Should be published somewhere round the end of 2015.

Thanks, everyone. I'm really looking forward to it, and it's been an interesting insight into this kind of how-to/text-book non-fic works: it's unlikely to go out of print for years and years and years, so there should be a steady dribble of royalties, and the occasional revised or new edition... As the commissioning editor said, "It's not like fiction: one year frontlist, three years backlist, and then out of print."

Though even then, there is an organised "pre-acquisitions meeting" to agree that a proposal is in good shape (even when the existence of the book has been pre-agreed, so the only questions are who writes it and how) before it goes to the Acquisitions Committee, so the hoops still have to be jumped through.

That's really, really brilliant. Well done!

I walked past Waterstone's the other day and in the window was this thing called 'The Writer's Toolbox'. I remember you talking about something like that some while ago, so did a double take and went back to look. But it was by someone else. Haven't yet ahd a chance to go and inspect it!
