  • Brain to pick needed re: adoption process

    Hi folks

Long shot, but there's such a wide spectrum of knowledge on here, I'm hoping someone might have the answer.

If a child's parents die, and a family member (aunt) wants to adopt her, would the child be placed in care while the process is underway? The child is about five, starts off not knowing the aunt very well but an obvious bond develops between them. Child has a grandmother who is in poor health and has no objections.

    Any info gratefully received

Many people would put in their will who they want to look after their children in the event of their death so that could be an easy way out of it.

"If the deceased have provided care details for their children in the will then the Executor will follow those lawful instructions. If there is no will then usually the family and Child Services will arrange for the most suitable family member to care for them. Generally Child Services will only use foster care as the very LAST resort. Every effort is made to place the children with family or close family friends over any external care agencies."

Formal adoption would come much later, if at all.

    Thanks Jem and Emma

The girl's mother comes to a sticky end, and father is eventually sentenced for bringing about the sticky end. It's unlikely the mother has made a will, and the grandmother is unwell and not able to look after the little girl, so it looks like the aunt will fit the bill as the most suitable person - perfect for my plot
