I didn't think this a great film although the editing was good - including mock-up news footage and the story told in flashback, Milk talking into a recording machine like Fred Mac Murray in 'Double Indemnity'. Sean Penn's performance was amazing, and it'll be close whether he or Mickey Rourke gets the Oscar. The activist meetings in scruffy rooms were my favourite scenes, triggering memories. The political manoeuvring and portrayals of majority spokes-people were depressing, as was outcome. The soundtrack was very good. I can never resist a film with a scene set at the opera.

That's a nice thing to say, Sheila! I'm very proud of him!
Yes, there was that bit in Sean Penn's speech, about the anti-gay demonstrators outside the Oscars venue, as a reminder of the bigotry that's still rife in certain quarters. We can only hope attitudes really are improving in that regard, although of course that's America so I hope there's more tolerance here.
