The lovely DT dropped a bit of a bombshell last night at the NTV Awards. SO, who should replace him when he goes in 2009? My kids say Julian Rhind - Tutt or Julian Rhine-Tutt or Rind-Tutt or HTF you spell it. I don't know who he is but are there any other suggestions?

I don't know who those people are, but I don't think anyone could be as good as luvverly DT


I know lots of people preferred Christopher Ecclestone, but I've always found him to be a shocking over-actor. Quite liked him as The Doctor, but not as much as Tennant.

Julian whatisname would be good but a bit too cheeky chappy again - so I think a bit too similar in 'character' if not looks to DT.

On Radio 5 this morning they were saying Alan Davies - who would be good as he can act and do amusing, but also serious and even sinister if he really wants. Doctor Who needs a bit of 'roundedness.' There's that tall, blonde actor who's been in a lot of comedies, Bill Nighy - he'd be good. Older so good contrast to DT but also charismatic and sexy.

They were also saying Joanna Lumley!

My son says he thinks we can't have a woman - or a black person. His reasoning is that The Doctor travels back in time a lot and unless they don't have episodes in past centuries when women and black people weren't considered equal then it would be difficult for him to accept the story because that bit would get in the way.

Controversial? Probably. But I can see what he means. Of course you can argue that the whole idea of the Dr and the entire story line is preposterous but I think I understand what he's saying. If you get the little details right - like the Dr and his assistant - then you can swallow everything else.

That absolutely brilliant one in the boys school had a storyline where it was relevant, or at least mentioned.

I don;t get why people like CE though. I just find him so OTT...he's always emoting all over the place

My son says it's fine for him to have a sidekick who's black/female but it just wouldn't work for the man himself. And what I liked about CE was the air of Mancunian menace he had. I thought he had far more authority than DT although I have grown to like DT more. They could have had John Simm - except he's already been on as The Master.

Ah, I love John Simm.

What about Stephen Mackintosh? Could be an interesting choice?

I love Steven Mackintosh, and Julian Rhind-Tutt, and I don't mind Alan Davies. I think they're stuck in the "has to be young and trendy" groove now because of all the kids watching it. Shame.

Just heard Mark Kermode on his Radio 5 film review and he just said the person who should be Dr Who and he is SO RIGHT!
