Hello to everyone on here. I thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm pretty much new to the whole idea of writing fiction. I've written many a report and critical essay (mainly in school for the latter) and love fiction in its many forms. I mainly love the fantasy/sci-fi/horror genre - I grew up on Stephen King and have his short stories on my bedside table for when I'm between books. I'm happy to read anything though.

I decided a few months ago to give writing my own stories a shot. I've uploaded my first attempt at a short story and would love feedback (please be gentle!). I've already realised mistakes I've made just from browsing this forum.

I've got a few ideas for short stories and am drafting a novel but I don't want to write a load of rubbish so would like to improve before I take them too far.

Fiona, it is always a good idea to join a group for feedback - i belong to the commerical short story group which is very friendly, or there are other short story groups.

Petal - I looked into writing groups in my local area, Bristol but found it hard to find ones that meet when I am free. There were a couple which I emailed but I've had no response from them!

No, i mean the groups on here, on WriteWords, Fiona - click on 'groups' at the top and you'll find a whole load you can join. Then, you comment on their work and they comment on your work. Sounds a bit scary at first, i know, but you soon get used to it.

Yes, i;ve tried to find a 'real-life' writing group to, but it is very difficult.

I tend to write Women's Fiction these days (have a look at our group if you're interested - we're always happy to welcome new members)but horror and fantasy are my first loves. I was a huge Stephen King fan for many years, though I'm not so keen on his later stuff, but'On Writing' is excellent.
