  • Children MSS Format?

Hi everyone. I'm new here, but have found it very helpful already.

I hope someone can help me. I have just finished writing the text for a Childrens picture Book - aimed at 3-7 age group. My problem is I'm not sure how to format it. I know it's double line space, the right font size and the margins etc.. but I'm not sure about is Landscape or Portrait? I've heard that it is different for short Picture book stories. Please help!
ps. i have no illustrations or illustrator yet.

come on over to Childrens' group - there are lots of people there who have submitted this type of thing.

You submit in portrait form and, if you're only submitting text, show the page by page breakdown.

If you're submitting text and pictures, you can send a dummy book or send the text and examples of the illustrations, I think.

If you're submitting to an agent, the general consensus seems to be that you submit maybe four manuscripts so they can see a range of your work; if submitting to a publisher, just send the one.

And of course, a fab submission letter!

just read your post properly and I see that it's just text. Normal portrait format is the way to go. You don't need to find an illustrator - if a publisher likes your work, they will do that for you.

Hi, Writingislife and welcome to WriteWords

To echo Freebird, come over to childrens and you'll find a number of keen childrens writers who can help oyu out.
One thing to bear in mind is childrens picture books are for the 3-5yr age group, and there are word count considerations depending on the story and book size.

If you need any help navigating the site feel free to ask.

Thanks all. Very helpful advice.. I will head on over the the Children's Books Forum. Thanks for the age advise, I wasn't sure about limiting it to 5yr. because I think older children may enjoy it too, but ta for the heads-up.

Age bands are for marketing purposes. Whether or not the book would be of interest to other readerships is not something the writer needs to worry about.

...there is a distinct difference between the formats, word counts, etc, for books aimed at the age bands of 3-5 and 5-7.
