  • A big hello from an excited (and a little nervous) newcomer!
by BenWS at 22:40 on 07 December 2009
    Hello all.

After many years (gulp) of lurking around in the background of WW i've finally taken the plunge and signed up for a trial membership. I have no idea why it has taken me so long to join up. I guess it has been a combination of nerves and my terrible procrastination. Blimey - even writing this first post makes me nervous!

I'm an aspiring author at the very beginning of my writing journey, and I'm very excited about joining this forum as it seems to be absolute best there is on the internet!

As a 30 year old Information Systems Co-ordinator I write a lot of un-interesting data reports. However, I have a lot of ideas bouncing around in my head and want to write more creative things. I want to get these ideas down on paper and develop them into great stories. Apart from writing many educational assignments and my Uni dissertation, I have no real writing experience (creative writing is something that is very new to me). Therefore, my grammar and spelling my seem a little 'naff' to begin with!

I mainly read sci-fi and modern military history (post first Gulf war), but I also read other fiction, science and sports books (cycling and motor racing). I would love to become a sci-fi author and entertain the people who would take the time to read my work.

I have signed up to WW to become part of this friendly, helpful and professional forum. And although I am very much a beginner, I want to chip in and help others too. As many people often say about sites like this - the more you put in, the more you get out! Hopefully I can add some useful insight to the many WW threads.

Well, that's all for now, sorry for waffling on. Call me Ben if you like and please don't frown too much if my grammar and spelling is bad! I'm looking forward to this. If I find WW this interesting in a month's time i'll gladly join as a full member.

Cheerio and thanks for reading. Ben.

Hi Ben and Welcome to WriteWords. Great to see a lurker finally taking the plunge.

As oyu say "the more you put in, the more you get out!" so have a look round the Groups and get stuck in. And if you get bogged down just give us a shout.

Hi Ben, and a warm welcome. There is a pretty strong Sc-Fi contingent on WW, so you should feel at home.

    And welcome to Witzend, too!

Dig in, and give us a shout if you need anything.

Thanks for making me feel welcome everyone. Hello Witzend, good to hear from a fellow newbie.

I have been dipping into the site all day checking replies and it's been nice. Just got some time to myself now to reply to everyone and investigate more of WW (it's been a busy day).

Dee, glad to know there is a sci fi contingent on here as this genre is something I enjoy very much. I actually live fairly close (well, less than an hour's drive) to one of my favourite sci fi authors. He happens to live in Rutland. I've never met him though, which is a shame.

Anyway, enough talking for now. Thanks again all and I hope to speak to you about writing very soon.

Oh yes. Nearly forgot to mention the fact that as well as signing up to WW, i'm thinking of setting up a web page or blog page to accommodate my 'development' as a writer. I'll explain more about this as and when I get more ideas about it.

    Cheerio all. Ben.

    Hi Ben

Looks like we're joining up on the same day! This time I've taken full membership - after a month's trial last year. I have tried lots of forums but never found one I like anything like as much. Good luck with your writing!
