    Hi,
My trial membership was up and I liked what I saw here. I thought this is the place for me so here I am back again as a full member.

I'm looking forward to getting stuck into WW - hopefully I've got a lot to contribute with both reviewing other people's work and showcasing some of mine. I'm hoping to meet people with similar reading/writing interests to me and get/give feedback on how to sharpen up my/our writing - and have fun at the same time! [Does that make sense? Maybe it's not the best sentence in the world - but you know what I mean!]

One question - I quite aften write short stories that are on the long side of short. They just end up that way sometimes. Let's say 5-10k words. Is there a natural home for pieces of that length in here? I know it's a hell of a lot to ask someone to review a piece that is 5-10k long and I wouldn't do it every day (not if I was actually wanted anyone to read it)! Do stories of that length often get banded about around here? Or would you advise sticking to shorter length stories?

    That's it. See you around.
    Sheffrey.

    Hi, Sheffrey and welcome back

You might notice there has been a bit of a shake up in the groups (or you might not ), but get stuck in.

As for size of upload, if you are purely showcasing the short stories, then you can upload any size you want in the Archive.

If, however, you're looking for feedback, it's best to split them up into several 2500-sized chunks and upload them in one of the groups over the course of a couple/few weeks -
a short story really doesn't need to be uploaded in one whole chunk, nor do you have to limit yourself to only writing shorter, short stories for feedback. You can link uploads, so anyone who comes to a later section of the short story and has missed the earlier uploads can read them in your own personal archive.

Good decision! As is evident from Naomi's welcome message, the site is fairly flexible as to how you can go about things. However, you will find members attuned to responding to smaller chunks. That doesn't mean they won't follow you through a series of postings to make up the full story - they will (in an appropriate group) - but it's wise to avoid the temptation to upload the next posting too quickly.

Try it out and see what happens.

Shorter is better as a general rule, and will get you more readers and more feedback, but...

Once you've built a reputation within a group, you may be able to specifically request a larger piece be looked at once in a while.

We have just done this with a couple of pieces in IC and, although it meant I couldn't fit them in over lunch, it was actually quite enjoyable to have a bit more story to read through.

Needless to say, the crits are different as you get longer; less picky, more "general feel of the thing" so not worth considering until you and, as importantly, your reviewers think your writing is up to scratch for such an undertaking.

Also, although I greatly enjoyed the two I just read, I would find it tough to fit in very many of them in a week...

So few and far between is definitely the rule.

But sometimes... Yes, I think sometimes it can be a good thing.

    Thanks everyone for the welcome.

Thanks also for the advice re: what to do with longer stories. I agree that posting them as installments would probably be the way to go.

I'm sure I'll get a better feel for all this once I've been around here a bit longer!..

    Ta.
