Okay, I think I've got it sussed, I upload a piece of work through the My WriteWords and then post a new thread in 'Introduce Your Work' with a link to said writing? Then I just dive in and start chatting / commenting on work?

First you need to pick one of the Groups to join, otherwise it'll just go into the archive where it's likely to be overlooked, then you chat/comment on work with the members in that group. It's best to pick one of the more active ones. (Click on 'Groups' towards the top right of the page to see them all. They are listed according to how active they are).
You can always upload it into the Archive, then pick a Group to join, and you'll find the work will move into that Group.
