  • What type of agent would you recommend I try to find?
by missjonesy at 17:18 on 18 March 2009
I've completed a manuscript which is a children's story. I'm a new writer so don't know much about the publishing world. I would like to get an agent.

What would you recommend from below:

    - I seek representation from a big name agent (do I stand more chance in getting better promotion for books in the long run?)

    - I seek representation from a small agent (do they treat their writers better than big agents?)

    - I seek a multifaceted agent. I'd like to write screenplays, so is it better to find an agent that also represents screenwriters rather than look for a second agent in the future?

What are the pros are cons of big agent versus small agent?

    Many thanks

    Miss J

    Hi and Welcome to Writewords

I spotted your other post about finding a publisher, so congratulations!
My immediate reply, here, is to seek representaton from any agent; cast your net wide. If you are lucky enough to hook the interest of a couple of agents (even with a book deal it's not a given), then maybe come back and ask the question, but at the end of the day, having an agent is part business partnership, part marriage - you have to feel comfortable with them on a personal level regardless of whether they are one man bands or part of a large agency.

    All the best

PS, there are a limited number of agents specialising in childrens fiction - far fewer than those dealing in general fiction - and a lot of the one man bands are highly respected, so the size of the agency shouldn't be your first consideration.

Excellent news - congratulations! I'd agree that it isn't as simple as big vs. small, but more about how you, individually, get on with the agent, and whether how they see your work fits with how you do.

A big agency would have someone else who could represent your scripts, but they might not be the best person to represent you, if you see what I mean: there are plenty of writers who use different agencies for their scripts. I think if I were in your position I'd do my damnedest to get the best agent I could for the children's book, and then embark on finding someone for the scripts.
