  • Question about short stories.
by Bunbry at 17:06 on 26 March 2008
Hi just wanted to say hello to all the other newbies and longer standing members. My main interest is short story writing which is usually prompted by a competition or as an exercise for my writing group.
My question is, what can I do with my stories? If they are not suitable for women's mags, is there another outlet for them? I don't expect money for them.
    Hope you can help guys

    Cheers Nick

I do like your online name. I often wish I had chosen something more imaginative. At the end of my first year I might re-join under a new and more exciting identity!

Hello Bunbry and welcome to WW.

It's always hard with short stories, unless they suit the mags (It's hard then too, of course, but at least you know what you're aiming at. As well as the JWB link you could try here, which is a sortable database:

Small mags come and go - even the relatively big ones like The London Magazine can lose their funding. There's Ambit and Glimmer Train and Anon, that I can think of off the top of my head, Comma do anthologies, as possibly do Salt (not sure about that?)

And then there are the competitions - Fish in several varieties, Bridport, Asham's women only, as is Mslexia but they have excellent listings, which they can't stop blokes reading, also I think The New Writer has listings too.

Thanks to both of you for your help in this matter. There are a few outlets that have really caught my eye so I've no excuse now! Actually I bet I can still think of one or two...
