I've forgotten how to copyright from my keyboard,

Can anyone out there refresh my memory.

I thought it was control key and c but that doesn't seem to

work.

I know you cannot copyright an idea,

I thought the written word was protected.

I notice even some of the site experts add a copyright mark to their work.

Copyright is an automatic entitlement if you've written something yourself. You don't need to put the symbol on your work for the copyright laws to apply.

Apparently Agents consider it a rookie mistake to put a copyright mark on a submission.

True that it looks rookie to book trade professionals. On the other hand, I've just come across this, in the FAQs on the Creative Commons website at http://creativecommons.org/about/

Q: Do I need a copyright notice to protect my work?

A: You do not need to apply a copyright notice to secure copyright protection. However, a copyright notice can be useful because it clearly signals to people that you believe you own copyright in your work and who to contact.

I also see it sometimes in newspaper pieces, for example, when the copyright belongs to the writer of the piece, rather than the paper/mag. Not so much the legal force of the ©, as a neat way of saying what you need to say.

Oh, and you can do it in any programme with the ASCII code, which is Alt + 0169.
