I feel so embarrassed to ask this, but how are you all getting nice neat round colourful smileys and I'm using the old-fashioned :-) ?

Deb, yes, as Myrtle says, just do the : followed by the ) without the - and there you go.
For a winking one, do ; followed by ) Like this
and a sad one is : followed by ( like so

Oh thanks both of you!
I knew about that way of writing smileys but where I hang out on the net we more usually use noses too, so I didn't think to try noseless!

If you put extra brackets round a shocked face you get a 'scream'
