Useful Information :
'Chalk the Sun was founded...by a group of professional writers and qualified teachers who wanted to provide high quality, inspirational creative writing courses without all the tedious paperwork required by Ofsted. We offer evening courses and monthly Saturday workshops to small groups of students in the comfy surroundings of the Balham Bowls Club bar, Ramsden Rd, London SW12 8QX as well as distance-learning packages, manuscript reading services and fun Poetry, Prose and Performance events. Our own experience as writers encompasses fiction, poetry, stand-up comedy, TV, film, radio, journalism and film plus children’s book editing/publishing.
All our courses are designed to stand alone so you can mix and match courses and workshops or do them consecutively; both offer full email support and written critiques of your work. Each session includes an opportunity for you to share ideas and work in progress and receive individual feedback, do writing exercises focused on specific techniques or topics, and participate in analysis and discussion of extracts from both classic literature and up-to-the minute contemporary fiction and drama. There’s often time after class to continue the debate over a drink or some food in the adjacent bar. Assignments are personalised to suit your level and needs as a writer.
Chalk the Sun also works in the community and recently edited a book of writing by domestic abuse survivors called Stand in Love. We have plans to roll out the specialised teaching programme, developed with these survivors, to other groups in women’s refuges and community centres across south London. We hope to create a site-specific drama, based on the women’s writings, with professional actors and community volunteers performing the play to raise awareness of domestic abuse.'
