Q. I want to start sending my writing out- but I’m not sure where to begin, there are so many companies. Where do I start?

A. Start by researching your market. Too many new writers ignore this at their peril- look at the kinds of books that are similar to yours and see who publishes them. Watch for the TV company credits at the end of a show that you feel is in the same territory to you- and write to them. Don’t just pump your work out en masse to everyone in the Writer’s Handbook- it’s a waste of money and time and when you get automatic letters of rejection, it will be because your work wasn’t even appropriate for those companies. Browse the directory section of our site for some very specific details of who to send work to.
