The Glad Cadaver

his box of tricks put away
he sulked beneath us
with tight lipped defiance
he showed the family up,

after all they had let him down
on frayed ropes in rough hands
undertakers fingers blessed by
nicotine & long shot betting slips,

his fox gone to ground he waited
for the family pack to wander off
towards the ' Horse and Hounds'
then slowly he began to burrow,

down into sticky cemetery clay
gravity pulling him from his bones
until each particle at last escaped
the nagging mouths of relationship.

Hi John, this really made me smile a wry smile at the end. I like the way you build up the picture gradually, with 'sulked' and 'tight lipped defiance', then the brilliant ending with the nagging mouths of relationship'. I have a very clear image of the situation.

I love the understated comparisons/connections:

'he showed the family up,

after all they had let him down'

and

'his fox gone to ground he waited
for the family pack to wander off
towards the ' Horse and Hounds'

I enjoyed this!

Hi JOhn
Liked this
is it the case that beneath the calm exterrior lurks a more sinister theme or is it just tongue in cheek??

Love the second and fourth stanza's - grest images
Defiance in death!

Thanks
Tina
